There are a number of alternative terms for underwear. "Underclothes", "underclothing" and "undergarments" are some terms, while underwear may be more often referred to as "undies" etc. In the UK the term "smalls" is sometimes used as a bit of fun.
Girls underwear is often known as "lingerie".
To our knowledge here at Sugaplum, women were allowed more physical freedom in the first years of the century 20th ((around 1900), and their clothes changed as a result because of getting involved with sports and such. Cycling and tennis were becoming acceptable past times for women and girls. Baggy bloomers, named after their creator Mary Bloomer, were also known as "rational dress." They were worn under thin dresses for cycling, but were thought racy at the time! A far cry from today of course.
Even before this time in the 1700's in Europe women and men were wearing long shirts under their clothes. These were more fancy or decorative depending on status and were never shown in public. Often called the chemise, these were worn under their clothing for most of the 19th century and beyond, although women received criticism for wearing underwear during this early time. Some doctors thought it may cause sweating and moisture so as to promote illness and disease!
Anyway it wasn't until much later in the 20th century that women and teenagers could wear their underwear with pride. Even in the liberal 1960's girls underwear can be considered tame by today's standards. Remember those pictures of Marilyn Monroe in here big bloomers!?
Well, luckily today in the 21st century, you can get your hands on fun, bright and well made underwear especially for teenagers. Cut and designed for the different fitting a teen body needs, you'll see the history of underwear changing with Sugaplum shop! Enjoy.
By the way, this article is a bit of fun and should not be taken too seriously, if we are wrong about underwear in any way, we're sorry!
