Teen Underwear and Underwear News

Sugaplum Shop Response to Sun NewspaperApril 23, 2008

Dear Sun Woman Team,

Response to your article, “Would you dress your 7-year-old in These?”: 23 April 2008

Lingerie from the SugaPlum Shop was featured in this article.

I would first like to point out that the SugaPlum Shop does not – and never has –marketed or aimed its underwear at 7-year-olds.

The whole concept behind SugaPlum Shop is to have a range of items aimed at adolescent girls that is fun, girly and pretty to wear and NOT sexy, racy, raunchy, or for the more mature women.

I have read your article and I would have to question how is it that bright colours can then mean porn? If you look at the background on the SugaPlum shop website, you‘ll see why the site was launched in the first place.

I should also like to point out that when we were asked to bring down samples we were only asked to bring down samples from our brighter collection, aimed at older girls 18+. You will see from the site that we have collections that are plain white, and grey marel – anything but sexy, racy or ranchy!.

I find it baffling that Deidre says: “letting young girls wear such explicit clothes gives the wrong message”, yet Deidre is happy to give advice to teens on sexual relationships! There are many articles in glossy magazines actively encouraging our young girls to be skinny, to win boyfriends, act older etc…I find that far more offensive then having a range of underwear that is simply colourful.

In addition to this your “fashion expert” Susannah says: “if your daughter needs a bra, take her to M&S or John Lewis and get one of the simple white ones.” Fine, but what do you do when your daughter has out grown the 32B white bra? Where do you go then, La Senza?

It was because of this very reason that the SugaPlum Shop was launched, so parents didn’t have to go to an adult shop to buy the racy, sexy underwear for their daughters, or go to where they would normally buy their own lingerie. Instead, there is now an online shop just for teenage girls.

I was inspired to set up the SugaPlum Shop by own teenage daughter and her friends, when I saw the great difficulty they had finding underwear that was right for them.

Being an adolescent girl is a very difficult time, but having something that is made for them and is bright and colourful will make them feel good about themselves. SugaPlum shop sells a range of items only aimed at adolescent girls and not 7-year- olds.

We would like to point out that we have received highly poisitive feedback from girls and parents alike, and it’s a shame that a newspaper such as The Sun is trying to sensationalise a topic that has no bearing on what SugaPlum Shop is all about.
